Win Aung is a leading founder of Dagon International, a major diversified conglomerate with a long history and interests in construction, timber extraction, agriculture and import-export. Known as ‘Dagon Win Aung’, his visionary guidance and leadership has raised a prominent business group among Myanmar’s elite.

Win Aung is the founder of Dagon International, set up in 1990. Originating in 1953 as Dagon Tin Factory, Dagon International is today a major conglomerate with ventures in agriculture, timber extraction, construction, import-export, property, hospitality management, distribution, food and oil. It employs more than 4,500 people in over 15 companies.

Win Aung’s wide outlooks and wellversed social relations have helped form a prominent business group. After the 2008 Cyclone Nargis, the government awarded his company multiple contracts for reconstruction projects within the Ayeyarwaddy Delta. His construction firm has also won contracts to help build the capital of Naypyitaw. The real estate portfolio of Dagon International includes Thurein Yeik Mon Housing Development, The Oasis Hotel (Naypyitaw), Ngwesaung Beach, Palm Beach Resort, Grand Golden View Condominiums, Dagon Centre and Dagon Centre II.

In 2003, the Dargon Group established a key retail shopping center in Yangon, dubbed the Dagon Centre. In 2011, the group opened Dagon Centre II and also upgraded and extended the Yangon-Mandalay national highway.

Dagon International is the main shareholder (57%) in Myanmar Agro Exchange (MAE) and holds a contract to build the fruit, vegetable and flower market as a joint project with the Yangon City Development Committee.

Conscious of his obligation to support social development, Win Aung has made many positive social development contributions in Myanmar and ASEAN Region. One of his most prominent roles is as vice president and president of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), from 1999 to 2016. Since 1999, he has maintained strong ties with the Greater Mekong Sub-region Business Forum (GMS-BF). An independent organisation in the six GMS countries, GMSBF is a joint initiative by member countries’ Chambers of Commerce. It promotes awareness of trade and investment opportunities and offers feedback to GMS leaders.

Win Aung strives to contribute to UMFCCI by establishing close working relations with UN agencies and other regional business organisations such as UN-ESCAP, UNFAO GMS, ACMECS and ASEAN. In 2013,
UMFCCI organized the Myanmar Business and Development week with UNESCAP, UN Trade, and Productive Capacity Cluster to strengthen the Myanmar’s private sector and create a supportive business environment.

Win Aung has also served as a member of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and National Economic and Social Advisory Council–NESAC.

Within Myanmar, Win Aung has also served as vice chairman of Myanmar Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association (MFVP); and for Myanmar Construction Entrepreneur Association (MCEA), a civil society social association with about 1,700 members. He is a leading founder of Myanmar Hotelier Association (MHA) and Myanmar Farm Crop Producers’ Association (MFCPA). He also serves as the chairman of Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holding Public Company (MTSH), a group of public companies from different business sectors and the largest shareholder-based public company in Myanmar in the 21st century. MTSH engages in the development of industrial and commercial infrastructures in Myanmar. In December 2015, MTSH was among six companies listed on the Yangon Stock Exchange.

Due to his excellence in civil services, Myanmar government awarded Win Aung the “Wunna Kyaw Htin” title in 2010 and “Sithu” title in 2011. He was also awarded “Lifetime Achievement Award for Entrepreneurial and Business Leadership” for the year 2013, by the World Chinese Economic Forum. Win Aung has also been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Thailand.
