“Our government is now encouraging foreign companies to make investments in Myanmar. So, we should also welcome foreign investment. Myanmar has good potential for foreign investments.”
Dr. Aung Kyaw Win is the founder of Shwe Nan Daw, an iconic company in Myanmar’s gems and jewellery sector. Born in Yangon, the young Aung Kyaw Win finished his primary education in rural Myanmar, after which his family moved back to Yangon and continued his study at Basic Education High School No.1 Dagon, well-known for outstanding students. Dr Aung Kyaw Win was awarded his MBBS Degree from Yangon University of Medicine in 1994.
Initially interested in a career in medicine, Dr Aung Kyaw Win decided to follow his mother’s interest in the jewellery industry, joining the business in 1994. Beginning with his family’s gold shop in 1990, the small company slowly penetrated into the local market, offering other gems and jewellery. Predicting a successful future, Dr Aung Kyaw Win opened the very first Shwe Nan Daw Gems and Jewellery shop in Chinatown.
Finding that it was not easy to compete among many other famous shops, Shwe Nan Daw sought to differentiate their offering by providing a one-stop sale and 24hr services. This unusual feature played a big role in making Shwe Nan Daw into a successful business. During just two years of business, in the 2000s, Shwe Nan Daw became popular enough to set up further branches and today its showrooms can be found in many famous places and well-known shopping centres throughout Yangon. In just six years, the company has grown into one of Myanmar’s leading companies in gems and jewellery, operating many branches in Naypyitaw.
Building on success in the retail sector, Dr.Aung Kyaw Win established Jewel Collection Manufacturing in 2005. The company’s mission is to penetrate the international market and to manufacture fine jewellery using latest technology, offering local buyers convenient access to designs which are trending on international markets. Through consistently excellent performance, the company achieved 2016 Association Award and is today the only global standard gems and jewellery company in Myanmar. The company also completed ISO 9001: 2015, ISO 4001 and ISO 8001 certifications.
Since 2016, Dr. Aung Kyaw Win has served as a vice-president of Myanmar Gems and Jewellery Entrepreneurs Association Yangon (MGJEA). The association is dedicated to the development of Myanmar gems and jewellery industry, creating job opportunities in local and international jewellery export markets and producing value-added jewellery products to raise the country’s reputation. Dr Aung Kyaw Win also authored a report, “Development of Value-added Gems and Jewellery Industry based on Human Resource”, submitted it to the government of Myanmar in 2016.
Benefitting from Dr.Aung Kyaw Win’s recommendations, the government allowed a central market for gold, jewel and metal. Although Myanmar is well-known for natural resources, these are currently mostly exported to foreign countries as raw materials, leading to net financial losses for Myanmar in this sector. Through the effort of MGJEA, the government has plans to permit free export/import of jewellery, envisaging three central fine gems and jewellery markets, indicating a promising future for the gems and jewellery sector.
Dr. Aung Kyaw Win has also been an active speaker for domestic peace and business regulations changes, which are the pillars for business development in the country.
Dr.Aung Kyaw Win is married to Thet Thet Khine, the Managing Director of Shwe Nan Daw and a committee member of Banks and Monetary Affairs Committee. She actively participates in national level business conventions to support business development of Myanmar. She is not only well-known in business circles but also has gained good reputation for wellbeing of women and for children’s rights. She and Dr.Aung Kyaw Win have a daughter who is currently studying the family business.
With the vision of an imminent ‘golden age of real estate’, Dr.Aung Kyaw Win founded United GP Development in 2014. The main tasks of this company are to build global standards in buildings, make way for foreign investments and create job opportunities. 68 Residence Condominium, the first project of United GP Development, is ranked highest for pre-construction sales. “68” means wellbeing and happiness in Chinese tradition and it is being constructed on one acre of land. Furthermore, Dr.Aung Kyaw Win is already making plans to start hotel and tourism business at his Somerset Serviced Apartments and discussions are underway with Singapore-based Escort.
In April 2018, the Myanmar government honored Dr.Aung Kyaw Win the “Sudhamamani Zawtadhaya” (an honor for contributing generously in donations and related religious affairs). He is also an active member of Moegoke Association (Yangon) and many other philanthropic activities, together with his wife.
